THE HOLIDAY OF A LIFETIME

Planning your overseas Honeymoon, the holiday of a lifetime. Planning for a honeymoon is often the best part of the wedding planning process because it’s planning for the first holiday as a new couple. Planning for an overseas honeymoon is a little bit more complex, but still a lot of fun. There are things to consider with an overseas trip that you wouldn’t think about for a trip in Australia.

How do we find our dream honeymoon?
1. Firstly, work out what you want from your honeymoon?

Most couples want it to be the holiday of a lifetime, and there is no reason why it shouldn’t be. Sit down with your partner, pen and paper in hand and make a short list of your ideal destinations. Maybe a tropical island? Or the snowy mountains, or perhaps a cruise on the high seas? Are you looking for adventure or total relaxation? This checklist should give you a good indication of the type of destination you both desire and a good start to begin researching.

How much money do we have to spend?
2. Set yourself a realistic budget. Even if your resources are limited, a good knowledgeable travel agent such as New Horizons or Jetset should be able to make your money go a lot further. Let your agent, airline and hotel know that you are honeymooning when you are making your bookings. This will often get you upgrades or extras you would not otherwise get.

Will I need to change my passport name to my married name
and if so how long will it take?

3. If you are planning on traveling overseas, it may seem romantic to have your married name on our passport for your honeymoon, so to be sure that it is, begin the arrangements at least 4 months prior to the leaving the country. Things can go horribly wrong with these things, it is time consuming and airlines are incredibly strict about name changes, it can also get considerably costly so make sure you do your homework.

What's the Weather Like?
4. Some tropical islands can be dismal in the rain, so check which destinations will have the best weather for the time of year that you want to travel. You can do this by checking online, or if you are dealing with an agent ask them to provide this information for you.

If you want to take advantage of the warm climate and are getting married during the Australian summer months, you may like to consider Indonesia, Thailand or Fiji and Tahiti. For a winter wedding you may like to take advantage of the sunny weather in Europe, the Maldives or the United States.

Vaccinations?

5. Spending your honeymoon sick or in hospital is not the ideal romantic start to your new life together! So, it is vital that you get all the relevant inoculations before traveling. Vaccinations and preventative medicines are required for some destinations; you should see your doctor at least two months before your wedding so that these can be planned. For instance many tropical diseases, like malaria, can be a serious concern and you may have to take preventative medications for up to four weeks prior to departure. You should also make sure you have enough prescription medications for your trip, including any contraceptives.

Queensland – The Sunshine State
